Retrial of Florida homicide where white man shot unarmed black teenager in full swing

If not for the quick thinking of Shawn Atkins, Michael Dunn might never have been arrested for killing 17-year-old Jordan Davis.

The Jacksonville man was in his truck at a Southside Gate gas station when the shooting occurred and was quick thinking enough to memorize the plate number on Dunn’s Volkswagen Jetta leaving the parking lot. He walked into the Gate, scribbled the plate number down on a brown plastic bag and gave it to one of the cashiers.

Recorded jailhouse calls about gun played in first-degree murder trial

Recordings of jailhouse phone calls from Terrance Anthony Jr. were played in court Monday as the state continued its case against the 18-year-old accused of killing a security guard in 2012 in Orlando.

In the first phone call, placed months after the murder, Anthony asks his girlfriend if someone picked up an item from a man he knows.

Unsure of what Anthony is talking about, the girl responds, “the gun?”

Anthony is immediately agitated and calls the girl stupid.

Warlocks murder defendant to take stand, claim self defense

SANFORD — Murder defendant Paul “The Dog” Smith, 49, was expected to take the stand in his own defense Tuesday morning in the 2012 shooting deaths of three members of the Orlando-based Warlocks motorcycle club in Winter Springs.

Smith, 49, will testify that he opened fire at a charity motorcycle ride in self defense — using Florida’s much-debated “stand your ground” law to justify the triple killings.

“Nicotine Murder Trial” in full swing

The former wife of a nuclear engineer – on trial for murdering his third wife with a lethal injection of nicotine in 1994 – told jurors about her “debilitating” illness that doctors were unable to diagnose during the final year of their marriage.

“They [the doctors] didn’t know what was wrong,” Leslie Curry testified in Orange County Superior Court on Sept. 15. “I was very, very weak – it was hard to do anything. I could barely even sit up.”

State asks court to reject new murder trial for convicted man

The Attorney General’s Office is asking an appellate court to reject convicted murderer Michael Lamar Woods’ request for a new trial. Unlike the defense, the state believes the trial judge did not err when he allowed the jury to hear certain testimony from Woods’ old flame, Julia Barnes.

And if any misstep did occur, the state says, it didn’t affect the case’s outcome.

1964 cold case double murder trial rivets city

From its outset, the investigation into who killed Jim and Lois Arrotta was beset by missteps and poor judgment.

Despite the gruesome murders and a bloody crime scene found on Sept. 4, 1964, Great Falls investigators allowed the Super Save grocery store to reopen for business less than 4½ hours after the bodies had been discovered. Caving in to pressure from the Super Save’s owners, the bodies were removed and customers allowed to enter the store by noon that same day.
